Mission
The mission of the Mediterranean Civilizations Research Institute is to enable postgraduate researchers, pursuing master's and doctoral-level studies, to examine the social, cultural, and historical heritage of the Mediterranean Basin from the perspective of Turkey's historical geography. By following and evaluating scientific developments, the institute conducts both theoretical and field/excavation research that adheres to ethical principles and maintains high standards of quality, efficiency, and international relevance.
The institute considers the values and contributions of cultures that flourished in the Anatolian Mediterranean throughout history as fundamental aspects of the "Mediterranean identity." It carries the responsibility of passing on this accumulated knowledge to future generations through research and advanced education.
Through its academic departments, including Ancient Mediterranean Studies, Medieval Mediterranean Studies, Modern and Contemporary Mediterranean Studies, Underwater Cultural Heritage Studies, Migration Studies, and Mediterranean Basin Geography Studies, the institute aims to foster an interdisciplinary approach. It offers postgraduate programs that integrate in-person and remote education, focusing on the historical and cultural evolution of the Mediterranean Basin.
The institute aims to cultivate internationally qualified researchers and scholars who can analyze the region's chronic issues and contribute to their resolution through field research. It seeks to collaborate with institutions and organizations in Mediterranean-bordering countries and other regions with similar interests by initiating international scientific projects and field studies. Facilitating the exchange of knowledge, materials, and researchers while enhancing dialogue among scientists is among the institute's core missions.
Furthermore, the institute is committed to developing national and international student exchange programs and providing scholarships for successful postgraduate students during their specialization process. It organizes local and regional field studies, cultural heritage projects, and scientific activities such as publishing books, journals, manuals, and maps; conducting courses, workshops, and panels; and hosting conferences, symposiums, congresses, and exhibitions.
Vision
The vision of the Mediterranean Civilizations Research Institute is to become a preferred institution for high-quality research and postgraduate education in the field of Mediterranean Studies on an international platform. It aims to train leading researchers and experts with global recognition in their respective fields.
Postgraduate researchers studying within the institute’s academic departments gain not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experience by participating in archaeological excavations, underwater cultural heritage studies, and geographical and socio-cultural fieldwork conducted by these departments. This dual approach enables them to specialize in their fields and critically evaluate the social, economic, and cultural heritage of the Mediterranean, which spans thousands of years.
The institute embraces the belief that postgraduate researchers should synthesize the social, economic, and cultural diversity of the Mediterranean Basin with their own academic foundations, fostering a broader understanding and identity development.
In addition to its research activities, the institute contributes to the institutionalization of studies in this field and broadens the scope of specialization through master's and doctoral-level education and practical applications. The research and trained specialists emerging from the institute aim to enhance mutual understanding and dialogue through international scientific collaborations and joint projects, ultimately playing a role in identifying and resolving the ongoing challenges in Mediterranean history.
Aligned with the mission and vision outlined in its charter, the institute is committed to developing and implementing interdisciplinary projects with a clear conceptual framework. These projects are designed to support ongoing and planned research activities while fostering a collaborative work culture. The institute places particular importance on ensuring that its projects, conducted in collaboration with national and international institutions within and outside Akdeniz University, result in tangible outputs, such as articles, journals/e-journals, books, visual/multimedia materials, exhibitions, service models, and technological products.
Through its evidence-based research and findings, the institute aims to foster an inclusive and multicultural understanding of history, free from prejudice and discrimination, while promoting unity and integration among the diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural groups of the Mediterranean region.
